3 Reasons Affirmations Don’t Work (unless you work them the RIGHT way)

For all you inspiration junkies out there you know what I’m talking about. You’ve heard it a hundred times, “Just repeat this positive statement over and over again and everything will change for the better.”
And I’m here to tell you that’s only HALF of the truth. There are things you need to do to get them to actually work rather than just being empty words.
Too many people write to me feeling disillusioned by the personal development industry. They feel like it’s all fluff and aren’t sure why things aren’t working.
The truth is that the Personal development industry is one of three parts of the Health and Wellness industry. The first part is the Doctors and psychiatrists, the second part is your therapists, and the third part is encompassed by the Personal Development industry.
When I say the personal development industry I mean Healers, Intuitives, Nutritionists, Hypnotherapists, Acupuncturists, Life Coaches, Neuro-Linguistic Programming practitioners etc.
The world of affirmations falls under the third area of health and wellness, and can be very powerful if you work it right. So here are 3 reasons affirmations don’t work.
Repetition and visualization are like the “fuel” you put in your car that makes it drive. When you have an affirmation you have to work it and feel it for it to be activated in your unconscious mind. The unconscious mind can be likened to your 5 or 6 year old younger brother or sister. It is a feeling mind, not a thinking mind. This is why affirmations must be felt instead of just thought. The easiest way to make them feel more real and inspire feeling within the unconscious is to repeat them often, and have them as visible reminders. This can be in the form of the written affirmation posted around your house or as a reminder that pops up on your phone (download the Awaken The Rebel App for free on itunes with help with this), or in the form of a picture that induces the image in your mind.
Action is the “driving” of the car in the direction you want to go. You choose what car you want to drive, you choose where you want it to go, you put in the fuel, and then you GO. Literally and figuratively, this is a pivotal part of the affirmations that has been overlooked in movies like The Secret and otherwise. This is where it’s important to create a new support system and a coach to hold you accountable to this new direction you are going. I am finding lately that a LOT of clients are coming to me saying that what they need most is a supportive community to be their bridge on the way to their destination. So whether it’s here or something else, definitely make it easier to take action by setting yourself up with supportive systems to hold you to it.
This is like the dirty little secret of working an affirmation. There is a special little trick to making it work. If you know anything about Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) you will know that there is certain language that resonates with your neurology and certain language that doesn’t. If you pick an affirmation that doesn’t actually resonate with your neurology it’s like the difference between a hit or a miss…and when it comes to changing your life in the direction of your dreams, we can’t have a miss. When choosing an affirmation for yourself to drive your car to the direction of your dreams you have to make sure it’s one that fits YOU. This is why I founded a movement called Awaken The Rebel, because if it isn’t the right fit for you then it just plain old won’t work. You need to make sure your affirmation is in YOUR words and it’s all about what you want, how you want, and in the words you want.
So make it personal people! It’s so important for you to stay true to YOU and what you want and who you are and where you want to go. Sometimes it’s hard to facilitate this for yourself because we are so ingrained in what and who we are “supposed” to be or “expected” to be.

For me, it’s always the action portion that fails. I can put together the right affirmations that do mesh well with my personal traits but when it comes to putting them into practice, it’s a problem. But the new year is coming and it’s time to try again!

I love this Shereen. It is so true, and I can truly vouch for the difference in affect between an affirmation that comes from you , and a cookie cutter affirmation.
